HealthSouth Erie And Parkinson Partners Of Northwest Pennsylvania Partner To Present “Parkinson’s Disease, The Basics and Beyond”


ERIE, Pa. ̶  April is Parkinson’s Awareness Month and HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital of Erie and Parkinson Partners of Northwest Pennsylvania partnered to present “Parkinson’s Disease, The Basics and Beyond,” in honor of patients living with Parkinson’s disease.

“Approximately 60,000 people are diagnosed annually with this devastating disease,” said Lynne Gotham, coordinator of Parkinson Partners of Northwest Pennsylvania. “We team-up with HealthSouth Erie to bring this great event to the community and educate those living with Parkinson’s on how to manage their disease and live a fulfilling life.”   

The event was held at HealthSouth Erie on Thursday, April 28 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. Nearly 80 Parkinson’s patients and their families attended and participated in presentations covering an overview of Parkinson’s disease, advanced Parkinson's, Parkinson's and depression, medications, coping, planning and support and Parkinson’s therapy treatments.

  • Tom Skelly, CRNP with UPMC Hamot, NorthShore Neurosciences
  • Jon Glass, PhD., Psychologist with NorthShore Psychological Associates
  • Tim Dommermuth, R. Ph., Director of Pharmacy at HealthSouth Erie
  • Lynne Gotham, Coordinator of Parkinson Partners of Northwest Pennsylvania
  • Debra Emch PT, Kasie Gilmartin SLP, Christine Baird OT, HealthSouth Erie

“HealthSouth Erie has earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval for Disease-Specific Care certification in Parkinson’s rehabilitation, which means we are committed to the highest level of care for our Parkinson’s patients,” said CEO of HealthSouth Erie John Papalia. “We want to ensure our patients continue to do well post discharge and this program allows us to provide additional safety education to help our patients and their families.”
